George was born October 12, 1922 in Amber, Iowa, son of
Reinder and Anna (Bodeker) Wessels. He graduated from
Center Junction High School. He married Mary Jeanne McDonald
on September 10, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois. She died on October 6, 2004.
He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as an Armored Guard on
USS Frederick Lykes.
George operated lumber yards in Onslow, Center Junction and Wyoming.
He was assistant manager with Walters Lumber from 1966 until he
retired in 1985.
He was a member of Onslow First Presbyterian Church, where he served
as an Elder. A member of Masonic Lodge Ancient Landmark #200 of Olin,
and the American Legion Post 259 of Wyoming. He loved sports and was an avid
Hawkeye, Cyclone and Cubby fan. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and woodworking.

George is survived by one daughter, Georgia (Acel) Catlett of Johnston, Iowa,
and one son, Dr. Gerald (Cheryl) Wessels of Anita, Iowa;
5 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren;
2 sisters, La Dean Osterkamp and Clarice Norton, both of Anamosa;
and a sister-in-law, Ruth Wessels of Meza, Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and two
brothers, Bill and Harry Wessels.

George R. Wessels, 86, of Onslow, died Tuesday evening, July 7, 2009,
at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa, following a long illness.
