Clarence E. Gartman was born October 8, 1914, in Bennett, Iowa, son of George and Amanda (Schwitzer) Gartman. He graduated from Elwood, Iowa, High School in 1934. He married Bertha Gallagher on December 25, 1938, in Des Moines, Iowa. She died on September 8, 2003. Clarence was a lifelong farmer in Jackson and Clinton Counties, retiring and moving to Maquoketa in 1979. He also sold Vigortone and silos. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, United M.E. Men, Izaac Walton League of America, and Clinton County Farm Bureau for over 60 years. He was charter member of the National Cattlemen's Association and Delmar Lions Club, where he served as treasurer for many years. He was a past president and honorary member of Maquoketa Bowling Association. He was a corn hand picking contest winner in 1938 and 1939. He was an avid hunter, golfer and bowler, and did volunteer work for the Community Cupboard for many years.

Clarence is survived by one daughter, Janet Weirup Trekell of Maquoketa; his grandchildren, Debra (James) Bates of Davenport; Michelle (Kevin) Anderson of Coal Valley, Illinois; Sherry (Daniel) Rud & their daughters, Alexandra & Alison of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; Wyatt Tabor of Iowa City; Joshua (Mandi) Basting & their children, Jazymne, Jacob, Jonathan, Dustin & Kyle; Rachel (Sean) Jett & their daughters, Aryeh & Audrina; Trista (Chad) Cronkelton, all of Davenport; Tyler Anderson of Colona, Il; Michael (Sara) Trekell & their children, Avalon & Ethan of St. Cloud, Minnesota; and Linda (Drew) Reed & their children, Tony & Leah, of Wichita, Kansas; a brother-in-law, LaVern (Joanie) Waugh of Hemet, CA and sisters-in-law, Shirley Gartman of Maquoketa, and Deborah Gallagher of Arvada, CO, and many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Allen Gartman and two sisters, Geneva Waugh and Charlotte Benton.

Clarence E. Gartman, 95, of Maquoketa, died Monday, March 8, 2010, at Jackson County Regional Health Center, Maquoketa, Iowa.
